Gender’s lost IDs

Women claim that nowadays it is hard to find “real” men. By this, I suppose they mean that today men can’t take decisions and responsibilities just as their father’s did. And this may be true. But why this happens?

1.       Modern women have undertaken this role voluntarily. In contrast with the previous generations, modern women are free to do whatever men use to do. The point is how they do it. They don’t have an example set by their mother, so they have to imitate their father’s behaviour. As a result, they adopt masculine patterns of behaviour, according to the stereotypes of the past, and part of this is the procedure to undertake the decision and the responsibility.

2.      Modern men permit women doing so. The previous model of family where father was the boss seems to be unfair for the mother of the young boy. So, he rejects it and adopts a more democratic way of behaviour towards women.

Nowadays, a woman is looking for a man like her father, and either she can’t find one or she can’t have him since she wants to be in charge. On the other hand, a man is looking for a woman like his mother, but also either he can’t find one or he can’t attract her since he doesn’t try to be in charge.

Keep it short!

I'd prefer reading magazine articles in the form of bullet points. I struggle to get the information through the writing "sauce" of each author. So, please stop pretending to be an author of the previous century and give me the stuff!

Evolution

I was surfing at bbc scotland website when I saw the following photo, taken by Sean Young:

It is a real photo of people enjoying the sunset; however, the first thing that came to my mind was that someone had set it up aiming to pass a message.

The combination of these pictures can take various meanings.People behind the leader stopped following him. And due to the fact that people behind the leader represent the past and they can't have changed direction, it seems that rather the leader has take the wrong way. Possibly we lost our orientation.
Another interesting meaning would be that the evolution leads to the sunset. Nothing to do with spaghetti films,   it could mean that we are moving towards an end.
In any case, I don't want to be pessimistic. After any sunset, a new sunrise follows.

Communication distance

I think that people usually prefer to keep a middle distance on their daily interactions with others. They feel unconfortable being strangers, so introducing to people that surround them makes them feel better. However, coming very close to each other also makes them feel uncomfortable for various reasons.
But this may be a little offensive. Imagine that you 're in a bus or a train and the next seated person introduces herself to you. You get to know each other and then you lose contact. What happened there? Have you been used to help an unknown pass the boring time of commuting? During this time you could have done something more productive for you.
That is the case of people doing networking. They create contacts, sharing every now and then pretty much useless information to keep the contact alive. Sadly, it is usual that when a contact needs them, they can't be available. They can't afford so many contacts and they are not really interested in all of them.
So if we define as micro-distance how easily you make connections and macro-distance how easily you get close with a connection, then, speaking of myself, I would have a very short micro and a very long macro. This means, it's very easy for me to get introduced to people, but it is hard for me to have a stronger relationship with this contact. It seems that it is a quantity-quality issue and though I prefer quality, I give priority to quantity.

Gymno Domatio, by Nikos Karvelas

One of my very favourite songs, it is called in free translation "empty room". It talks about someone who is left just waiting in an empty room for something to happen, even if this would be the end.

Instead of following a way, let the way follow you!

It's true. Connections and mentors can help you find your way much faster. But there is always a trap over there. There are people who invest so much on networking, there are people who are based so much on advices. As a result, they forget the most important key to success: WORK. You have to search and see for yourself, don't rely on someone else's opinion, you have to work hard. So, do not expect anyone to help you unless you work hard and have something to give in enchange. But if you do, don't sell it short!
I think this rule applies globally. Can you imagine the consequences of giving something expensive for free? Easy come, easy go, they say.

This thought lead me to another. Nowadays, research is easier than ever. The resources are millions through the web. As a result, when someone tries to support a thesis, she can find articles from previous researches to support it. Those researches are based on other researches etc, it's like a pyramid. However, we should take into consideration that each research has a context. Applying one theory to prove another requires to check the restrictions. Unfortunately, in this furious era and in front of the need to show results, people have combine
ideas incompatible. There is a confusion. Instead of working with the primary tools to construct something solid, that you own it, you borrow comlex tools which few know how to use them, and the result is poor.

Mixing my previous thoughts, I conclude to the following:

Instead of asking for advices on which way to follow, make your own way.
Instead of following a way, let the way follow you!

My default settings

Recently, I noticed something strange. I was just waken up and shaving, when I remembered that the previous night I fell asleep listening to music. For some reason, I felt a sense of shame for the kind of songs I was enjoying the previous night. And that was happening again and again. After sleeping, I have different music taste. More specifically, during daytime I am used to listening to western kind of music, while at noon I prefer an eastern one.
Then, I realised that this phenomenon used to be more general. As long as my mind is clear, I am keen on western way of life and my behaviour follows the context of my western-type education. By the time I got tired, my mind returns to its "default settings": the eastern way of life and behaviour of my parents.
Based on this, I formed a theory: our early education and character shaping is much stronger than the one we obtain later on from school. Our development during early childhood shapes our "default settings". Our education provides adjustments to these settings and forms our new values and behavioral norms. All of our "default settings" may be subjected to change through our lifetime. However, their core always exists buried in our mind and it comes to surface during "brain failure" (e.g.fatigue).
Can this be right? Is there a similar established theory? And if true, how can it be helpful?

Advantages and disadvantages of teamworking

It is said that there are three main advantages of teamworking. Motivation, accountability to other team members,  and comparison  to them. On  the other hand, there are two main disadvantages, the  process losses, and  the social loafing, which  is the avoidance of someone to do something, because he believes that someone  else will do it. Reaserchers have found that this phenomenon decreases in task visibility and  increases in distribute justice. It is believed to be the main reason of a team's deficiency,  and consists a popular field of  research. This is why Kotter  considers urgency as the first step in creating an effective team. The sense of urgency  reduces or eliminates social loafing. However, how hard it is to create and maintain that sense, struggling to avoid   burnout!

Imperative

Yesterday I went to the post office. I asked for eleven stamps and then watched the cashier cutting a receipt and throwing it to the basket. I was afraid that she wouldn't give it to me, mostly because it wasn't for me, and I asked her politely if I could have that receipt."That wasn't yours, don't hurry", she replied. I can't say she was rude, besides I know her, she is good at what she does; but I can assure you, the imperative sounded terrible. So, today's lesson is: avoid using imperative when serving someone. I have to find cases where one should use it. One is certainly when you have to convince or sell something; but never when serving.

Brook's Law

Brook's law: "adding more people to a late software project only makes it later. Also called the mythical man-month" (McShane/Von Glinow, Organizational Behavior,2010). Of course this rule applies to other projects as well, and the reason is the existence of process losses (time for communication in this case). However, it is not absolutely true, because, as you can read  here it depends on when you will add manpower, how many people you will add and how experienced the new stuff is.
Reading about this law, I recollected a champions league football game and an old goalkeeper's comments on it. Chelsea was desperate for a goal to get qualified and for the last ten minutes coach Mourinho chose to play with four strikers. Brook's law worked fine and Chelsea couldn't get coordinated to score. What impressed me was the simplicity of the old greek goalkeeper, Giorgos Mirtsos, in describing Brook's law: "the flood system"!

Measure your production if you want to increase it!

Over the last almost four years, I keep witnessing the same thing over and over again: during a meeting at work we all agree to do a list of activities, and the other day we just forget. I 've just had enough of this. At our last meeting, I suggested that we should measure how much we stick to our plan, it's the only way to be kept concentrated to our goals and motivated. During the meeting I wasn't taken seriously, because my colleagues still considered that we all were mature enough to need a written tracking of our efforts. I had met again many times the same reaction in the past, so this time I decided to take responsibility of the situation. I did something very simple.
My concern was about how should we increase sales.
I created a sheet called "Suggestions for sales". There were four columns: the name of the team member (with a field to sign below it), name of customer, product attempted to be sold, and notes.
Then, I convinced the headmistress to apply it. I'm the lowest ranked in my team, because I'm much younger, so I wouldn't have been taken seriously if i had given them the sheet. Each day, before we leave, we had to complete the sheet and sign.
The first day of its application, the sheet was almost empty, a clear proof that we didn't apply what we discussed in the meeting. Then, I left on vacation.
When I returned, I found my headmistress excited: "This works", she told me. "Now everyone is participating!"
It is difficult to sign that you didn't at least try to do what you are supposed to do. In this way, not only we secure that colleagues participate in the common effort, but we can measure how much they do and in which direction they move. So easy to apply and totally costless.

The true evil of our time

I 've just read an interesting post on "The Meekonomicks project" blog, The true evil of our time . It's about greedy corporations, and everyone understands the point.
My comment on this post follows.

"I think that another cycle takes place. Nowadays, we 're witnessing an imperialistic war between companies, which may be good though new countries appeared to the map of economy.
In my point of view, we should take responsibility of the situation. We are fueling this companies due to our luck of values, and we can't change that through education, because our way of lives impose this emptiness. I believe that a greater crisis is imminent, which will downgrade our living standards. As a result, new values may emerge, focused on survival of each local or virtual society. Then, companies will have no other option than to adopt this value at their missions: give back to society. So, if this is what will happen indeed, as far as I'm concerned, I think that this system is more democratic than the previous one. My only concern is that we may be the "wasted" generation."

Something evil leads to something pure

Building Relationships

Communication is a tool for building a relationship. Some people consider that building a relationship is just to get introduced to someone. I know several people who use their communication skills to meet new people. However, this is just the surface. This relationship is doomed to failure on the first disagreement. My work experience as a teller taught me that every relationship is getting stronger with hard effort. In every contact with someone you have to set boundaries and context. You have to train the other to cope with your requirements and you have to get trained to cope with his/hers. This is not an option. This is obligatory if you want to make this relationship work efficiently. The only tool you 've got in this exchange is communication.

The worst part is that you have to work on building a relationship with EVERYONE. There is no choice. You can't choose which relationships you want to invest in, because inevitably in every day life and work you are related not only to people of your choice. So, since you have a contact, why not build this relationship to work properly, no matter if your are "compatible" with the other or not? It's just simple rules of communication. The only input, though expensive, is positive energy and good will.

Systems Thinking

I 've spend the last couple of hours reading about the learning organization, an idea which seems to be profound to younger people, but it is relatively new. The term belongs to Peter Senge who develops it in his book "the fifth discipline". Mr Senge views an organization as a system able to continuously adaptate and change and bases his theory on Systems Thinking theory. My little research lead me to some videos on YouTube. If you are interested in this field, take the time to watch Dr.Russell Ackoff.

Something about death

Today a colleague learned about the death of a friend's mother. It was unexpected. On the one hand the woman used to have cancer, but she was supposed to have been cured. She was very well, and suddenly she is dead.
It is a usual phenomenon. Someone is very sick. Everyone believes that death is very close, two days top. Suddenly, the sick man gets back to life. It is a miracle. He is better than ever and he lives a normal life. Unexpectedly, he dies.
How many times you have heard of that story? I bet a lot.
This is my personal feeling about the Greek default. Everyone bets on it, Greece is very sick and there is no hope. I think that during the following months, when some of the measures take place (hopefully), there will be an economic boom, at least as far as Athens Stock Exchange is concerned (unemployment will climb to 18%, this is fate!). I can see people talking about a Greek miracle, about an historical recovery, and Greek people feeling more relaxed about the future. I am looking forward to hearing that the common sense is that Greece will survive once again.
This will be the time when the default takes place.

Greek tax evasion

They say that tax evasion is Greek's national sport. This is not at all true.

A sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means (wikipedia)

Greeks don't have to make an effort to avoid taxes. It comes naturally. It's not even amusing. So, it's not a sport!

About Democracy

Sometimes, lawmakers in a democracy take measures that people don't approve. How can this happen in a democracy? They are supposed to do what the majority wants, aren't they?
To make it clear, I never believed that we should do what the majority votes for. I will analyze this later. My point is that we should change the name of that form of government. Democracy was applied in ancient Athens (that's a city, back then a village, not a country). You can do this only in a small number of people, and still I doubt if it's effective. To lighten up the mood, "demos" nowadays in Greek means municipality (back then ment "citizens", to a free translation). People consider that since we have a democracy, we should do what the majority wants, and that's why they get mad when it doesn't happen. Fair.
Now, why I doubt about the efficiency of a democracy. As Socrates said, when you 're sick, will you take the advice of the majority or the one of a doctor? When a manager has to decide if he has to close down a department, should he ask the employees of the department or his accountant? Usually, citizens don't have sufficient data to judge a government. And usually, the government can't provide them. Even decades later, people still debate whether a government was good or not. So, we can't have a democracy. We just have a political system which includes a kind of elections!
Another negative point of this system is the constant change of ministers. How can a ministry apply a policy when it constantly changes its minister. There is no stability and coherence.
I often think that maybe a system with a few governors who would be the same for a long period, maybe this would be better. I am not sure. Think about football teams which keep the same manager for many years! United, Arsenal. They know what's happening, either this is bad or good.
However, maybe this kind of thoughts belongs to the past. Maybe the future doesn't include countries and governments. Maybe it is just economic areas and companies. Hopefully for good!

Mythodea

These days I study a lot. I use to study listening to cds and evaluating songs. As a result, I decided to post my latest evaluations.

I 'm sure you are familiar with Vangelis Papathanasiou. He is the composer of the  Chariots of Fire, Conquest of Paradise and many other globally known compositions. For the astronomy freaks, there is only Mythodea.

I'm copy/pasting from wikipedia:

"Mythodea: Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey is a choral symphony by Greek electronic composer and artist Vangelis. Originally premiered in concert in 1993, it was published in 2001 by Vangelis' new record label Sony Classical, which also set up the NASA connection and promoted a new concert.

The 2001 version of Mythodea was recorded and played on-stage by: Vangelis on synthesizers and keyboards, the London Metropolitan Orchestra augmented by two harpists, sopranos Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, the chorus of the Greek National Opera, and, for the concert only, the Seistron and Typana percussion ensembles. The concert was held in Athens, Greece on June 28, 2001, and the record was officially released on October 23, 2001, to coincide with the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft entering the orbit of planet Mars. A video of the concert was released in early 2002."

To be honest, I can listen only to the beginning and the ending of the cd. Maybe I'm not educated enough in music, but I get bored of the rest movements. I am especially touched by movement 9, where sopranos are attended to Mars, asking him (he is supposed to be a god) to prevent fate happen.

Social Norms

I have to do a research on how social norms affect productivity. My sense is that they restrain it. For example, imagine that you are in a meeting. Someone suggests doing something totally opposite with your suggestion. What is happening? According to my experience, after negotiating for several time in terms of being polite to anyone, both parties compromise with a solution which lies somewhere in the middle. And it is not working,of course. What it should be done is to adopt my suggestion... I mean the suggestion that sounded the best as a whole. In this way, if it didn't work, there would be someone accountable for the failure. Moreover, he would have to cope with his damaged reputation at the next meeting, so he would not be able to pass a new suggestion easily.
A system of crediting success and failure would be the most effective. Even people who don't suggest something would be able to support a point of view and take the positive or negative credits. Finally, in this way, one can pinpoint the ones that don't participate at all!

Negative charge

Lately i don't try to appear as a good person.actually i tend to be indifferent about other people's opinion. I get mad with people.i feel like being negative to everyone.i feel better being alone. Do you ever feel the same?

The boy at the concert

Today I went to a concert. I was sitting beside a kid about six years old who was discussing with his mother about planets. I used to have a passion about astronomy. The boy wanted to see Venus. Unfortunately, Venus wasn't there! I would be so happy if I could show him! I didn't participate to their discussion. I was waiting to get darker to see the stars. As they were getting visible, I was preparing a whole lecture about what to say to the kid. I could show him Polaris, that would be interesting. Finally, the sky was full of stars. We could talk for hours.
But I never spoke to the kid. Despite the fact that I appear so social and I communicate the whole day with customers at work, the truth is I am so shy, that I don't dare to talk to a little kid. Especially to a kid. It seems to me such a great exposure!

Being rude

Sometimes I feel in need to be rude. That happens because I don't feel ok with numerous things and I don't want to pretend. I just don't understand why I have to be polite. To avoid tensions? I want this tension! To protect my profile? Even if I had an image maker, you would find a reason to blame me. I believe that we should express ourselves openly, no heart feelings.

Words and Guns

Some people have a lot to say. They are able to narrate stories of their life for hours. Then, they ask you: "what about you?", and you realise that you have nothing to say. "Am I so boring? Nothing happens to me? Is it possible not to have a single thing to share with you?".
But, just take a closer look at the stories those people are saying. Imagine, now, that all these things happened to you. Would you keep them in mind and bother to tell them to someone else? Even if the answer is positive, would your narration be so long and vivid, or you would just tell your story in a minute?
This is their weapon: their stories. There is a certain type of people who use to share with you every irrelevant detail of their life, pretending that it is a matter of life and death. This is how they feel important. This is how they socialize. And I'm sure they don't even know it.
We develop certain types of behavior, "our weapons", to go through our social life.
Take the time and spot yours!

Live your myth in Greece!

Initially, it was awkward. The fear of our country stop paying made everyone nervous. After several months (a year and a half), we got used to it. We are witnessing historical moments, not pleasant of course, however, there is no fear any more. I feel that everyone reckognizes that sooner or later we are going to live a default. Finally, people are united against our sick political system. So far, they supported it, because they were expecting something from it (for personal profit). Now that their hopes have died, they express their real feelings. I only hope that everything will happen in peace.
To see a good part of this sad era, it is a lifetime experience! One would be able to narrate these years to his grandchildren! You don't know how things will be even in the next hour! Everything is changing and this can be only positive when everything is wrong.
But this will take a long time. My life time. I am looking forward to living somewhere else! I can't stand of this uncertainty. I can't make any plans. I have a very good job (despite the greatest unemployment rates ever), but I don't know if I will have this job next month. And I won't find at this moment another job paying the same money. How would I take any decision for my future in Greece? I would leave this paradise on earth with pleasure!

Magic Park

Today I spent several ours with my best friends (my best man and his wife) and my god daughter. Maybe it's not the best for me being single and hunging around with a family, but, honestly, I like it. You see, my god daughter is so sweet! In the morning, we spent an hour at the zoo. What can be the best part of the zoo for a two year old girl? A wooden bridge, of course! We couldn't stop her crossing the bridge for a quarter!
Late, in the afternoon, we visited Magic Park. It's something like Disney Land, like 1/1000000 the size of Disney Land! However, it is huge for our little princess.
I am exhausted! But playing with children is the most relaxing activity. Your soul calms down.
Sometimes, I watch all these family guys doing nothing and I get anxious. I mean, I can't imagine myself having no other interests apart from my family. Although maybe they know something more. All of them seem to have a secret well being kept, which makes them feel superior. Little do I know.

Olympus

I have really missed a trip to a mountain. So, today I make a promise to myself: on saturday, I 'll go to Olympus again. I don't want to have some company, so I'm thinking of visiting the national park which is safe. I put some pictures from my last visit.

They say that one takes a decision based either on reason or on emotions. My question is where the reason is based? On emotions, maybe? I like this theory.

It's too darn hot

Last week, I spent several hours studying at Starbucks (Kamara, Thessaloniki). However, it 's a very nice song, so finally I bought it. Enjoy it!

I read the following quote while turning pages of a book about myths:

"Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths",

I am not intended actually to comment on the quote, I liked it mostly because of its sound (!). However, in this way I discovered the existence of comparative mythology.
I do believe that myths in various cultures have a common origin, and now I discover (a lifetime later) that this is a field widely researched.

Seriously, after finishing my MBA on finance, I should study anthropology; For each man should study something for his pleasure once in his lifetime!

Arrogance

God believers consider themselves humble, because they recognize the existence of something greater {than human and universe (?)}.
I argue that when you believe in a god, you are arrogant. Instead of recognizing that our world is complex and we are not in a position to explain everything but a part of it, instead of being humble to recognize this, a god believer provides the answer for all the unsolved issues: my god did it!

Globalization

"The healthiest kind of globalization we could experience is one where we're actually not pushing it too far" (Dani Rodrik, Harvard international political economy professor, on Tom Keene, Bloomberg).

Imagine how hard it is for elder people in small countries, who are more tied to their national identity, and they have lived decades of years believing in certain ideas that globalization ruins. It must be like the end of the world! It must feels like being rejected from the world.

I believe in globalization. But I also believe that we should respect all these people and not push it too far. It needs time.

Happy whatever

Most of the wishes contain the word "happy". Happy birthday, happy new year, to be happy. Is it so important to be happy? I mean, hapiness isn't a permanent feeling. So, one cannot consider it as an achievement. Hapiness can be ruined anytime. Besides, the best achievements in human history belong to people who where actually unhappy and they were trying to express themselves by creating something. I believe we should change our wishes. Productive new year, creative birthday, and "to be innovative" would be better. Finally, it is at least annoying to hear about hapiness when you 're not. So, cut it off!

I do believe that we are still primitives. We 're supposed to be civilised anymore, that is our distinction from our past. However, are you satisfied with your communication abilities? I mean, there are several times that I am not able to support an argument. Most of us don't bother to act as civilised people. They base their reactions in feelings and stereotypes, immitating behaviors. I try to take a distance from my daily interaction with people to see how I behave. I am very disappointed by myself!

Why you like Dr House?

I am seriously asking. And I 'm not asking if you like Dr House (from the popular tv series House M.D.), but why you like him, because I 'm sure you do. I wish I had some feedback to back up a theory I have in mind. Thank you!

Ignorance leading to mistakes

There is an advertisement in Greek television using "Ederlezi", the soundtrack of a famous movie about Gypsies, as its theme, in an attempt to create a sad atmosphere supporting the scenario of the ad. What they didn't know is that Ederlezi is actually an optimistic song, celebrating the springtime. So, I don't understand their choice. I suppose that they found its sound quite melancholic. Lucky them the greek audience is ignorant too!

Phones calls

The funniest part of a phone call is at the end of the conversation when people talk simultaneously, saying goodbye about five times each. Are we in need of saying the last word, or the last speaker is consider to be more polite? Anyway, that's funny!
